Hi all,
Recently the pace of life’s getting a little slow, a little boring and I feel like picking up a hobby that I could just take time and develop whenever and wherever and won’t really have to feel pressured into doing (like going to classes every week at some remote places 2 hours away).
Is there a way for me to self-teach myself wood-carving or whittling? (I personally don’t believe you absolutely need a teacher, the very first teacher didn’t have a teacher) What’s the difference of the two? Are they more suitable for different shapes or objects you want to achieve with wood? I think I’m a little more interested in whittling, but I know little of the difference.
What kind of chisel or whittling knife should I use; are there a more universal one (so instead of having 15 different kinds I can just have 5)? Are there shapes or objects I should start out practicing like when you’re just starting out drawing teachers would tell you to draw geometric shapes (square, triangle)?
My goal years down the road is to be able to carve figurines of…people, I guess. (NOT bed frames/wall frames/ceiling frames or whatever commercial application decoration stuff with ornamental shapes, this is a hobby for fun) The closest commercial application if you must - for the people who can’t think outside of such framework - is probably those religious carvings from various religions of their saints, and gods; or just plain animal figurines as well.
So, what do you think? Thank you!

How to make small birds from simple materials for a mobile(wood, carving styrofoam?, wire, etc)?
Filed Under Sculpture | Leave a Comment
I need to make a hanging mobile(kinetic sculpture) for physics class that demonstrates torgue. Instead of abstact shapes I’d like to use birds
I was THINKING carving styrofoam for the body and head of the bird and using cardstock or thin wood for the tail and wing feathers and then painting them. I have never worked with stryofoam though so I am not sure if it is difficult.
Someone also suggested origami but I’d prefer to keep it a bit more realistic looking.
*that demonstrates torque, excuse the typo.

Carving things out of wood just by hand?
Filed Under Sculpture | Leave a Comment
My sister is 16 and well shes never been good at anything, but I watched her take a knife and just an old log she found outside and she carved a beautiful woman out of the wood. No templates or anything she just…did it. It was so beautiful. How did she do this without templates, proper carving tools or ANYTHING?

Where can I find an appraiser for an antique wood carving of a dragon in Malaysia? Would appreciate any help?

The wooden carving originated from China and is six feet in height. It is a family heirloom for many generations. Appraisal is needed for purpose of sale through Sotheby or Christies

What is a good kind of wood to carve with turning tools, chisels and files?
Filed Under Sculpture | Leave a Comment
I received a woodworking tool kit for Christmas, with turning tools, chisels, and files. Does anyone know what type of wood is good for a beginner to carve?
And where I might get a chunk of it? (I live in the desert)
Thanks a bunch!
