Wood carving/burning?
Filed Under Do It Yourself (DIY) | Leave a Comment
This seems like the closest to acceptable area to post this, hobbies and crafts seemed to be for making less difficult projects.
I’m interested in creating a headboard for my bedframe for my new apartment but I would like to either carve or burn a pattern into the wood. How do I go about cutting and or burning -accurate- patterns into the frame.

What is a good starting project for wood carving?

I don’t want it to be something stupid like a statue, I want it to be something you can use. (I’ve seen spoons, swords, bows)

How do I hollow a tree trunk?
I have the carving tools, the file, the trunk, but I don’t know how to hollow it. I can’t simply start carving down the center of a tree trunk, i would either need to split the trunk in half vertically (which I don’t want to do), or somehow saw a hole down the center of it to give me somewhere to start carving. It’s hard to explain this in writing, so I appreciate any help you can offer!

Does a wood carving block/board have to kiln-dried?

Can I use a plank of green walnut or oak as a meat carving board or should it be properly kiln-dried and sealed with mineral oil first?

OK, I want the Spyderco Endura Wave, but I’m also looking to start carving wood as a beginner. My question is : Can the Spyderco Endura Wave handle the carving of wood, and, if not, which stylish foldable knife can?

I guess my real question is: Do I have to know exactly what I want to carve before drying it? Is it so much easier to peel off the bark before you dry that you want to decide what you want to make it and peel it off accordingly? Or is it just as easy to peel it off after it drys?
I only have one chance at the moment and I want to get it right. Any experience on this would be great advice. Thanks in advance.
