Valley Glass asked:

Though vinyl dominates the replacement window, remodel, and new construction markets, fiberglass windows have carved out a niche for themselves. Both their durability and their close resemblance to wood make them an attractive higher-end alternative to vinyl and a comparable one to wood windows.

Fiberglass resists rotting, warping, and cracking, and manufacturers say that it provides a maintenance-free product that is more energy efficient than aluminum and stronger than vinyl.

There are currently less than a handful of manufacturers offering fiberglass replacement windows, but the market is growing. There are other competitors coming out with fiberglass products because the wood and building industries recognize that fiberglass is a superior material to use for building.

Most fiberglass replacement windows are offered with many of the same glass options as vinyl windows, in many of the same styles. There are also a variety of finishing touches available such as interior wood graining and numerous grille and divided light options. They install the same as other replacement windows and unlike vinyl, fiberglass can be painted.

What’s more, fiberglass replacement windows can be used in every type of climate, from cold and harsh to hot and steamy. Fiberglass manufacturers claim the products will maintain their rigidity even in extreme temperature changes, while vinyl can lose its form under extreme heat.

Made from Duracast, a five-layer fiberglass material, Impervia windows resist extreme heat and cold, corrosion, moisture, scratching, denting, and impact. Available in single-hung, sliding, and fixed styles, the windows come standard with low-E glass in a white powder-coat finish that can be painted. A number of glazing and grille options are available.

Now available on the Summit window collection, the WEN-Lock is an upgraded lock that features an ergonomic design with an oversized button, which allows those with limited mobility to use it easily. Its automatic locking action can be manually overridden, and an inconspicuous indicator notch, which can only be seen from inside, shows the lock’s status.

Available in custom and standard sizes, the fiberglass Ultra and WoodClad double-hung tilt sash replacement window features top and bottom tilt-in sashes for easy cleaning and comes standard with SunCoat low-E glass. Both models come in five exterior colors and with interior treatments of either prefinished white or clear vertical-grain Douglas fir.

WinGuard Impact-Resistant Windows and Doors are now available with vinyl frames that meet International Building Code Standards for air and water infiltration, as well as structural and large-missile impact tests. The replacement windows and doors feature impact-resistant laminated glass, plus an air space and a third piece of glass for insulation. The doors and replacement windows are available in white or almond.

Aluminum-reinforced interlocking meeting rails, ergonomically designed push-button ventilation latches, and 12-point fusion welded sashes and frames provide enhanced security on 5200 Series vinyl windows. Insulfil foam-filled master frame extrusions and PPG’s Intercept warm-edge spacer system combine to provide energy efficiency. The series is available in sloped-sill double-hung tilt-sash, two- and three-light lift out slider, and picture replacement window styles. Energy Star qualified laminated Armor Glass is also available.

Integrity windows are made from Ultrex, a pultruded fiberglass material that is impervious to heat, cold, and pressure, says the maker. Many window styles are available; all feature the Energy Star rating, low-E II coating, and argon gas between the panes. The windows come in pebble gray or white finishes and can be painted.

The Sterling Double Hung wood window conceals all vinyl parts by completely hiding the jamb liner, block and tackle balances, and hardware grooves. A multifunctional sash lock incorporates a dual-positioning tilt lever and eliminates extra latches on the window sash. The replacement window comes in an all-wood version in a wide variety of wood species, such as oak, maple, mahogany and Douglas fir, and also comes in an aluminum-clad version available in 22 exterior colors.

Enhancement vinyl windows are available with cherry, light oak, and dark oak interior finishes and come in double-hung, picture, swing-in slider, Easy-Load slider, bow, bay, casement, and garden styles. Five hardware finishes, a variety of decorative grid and V-groove patterns, high-efficiency glass, tempered glass, and the concealed Stealth Lock are other options.

The SuperCell 2000 cellular vinyl replacement window features a wood-grain interior, integrated brick mold exterior, integral J-channel, flush hardware, and a contoured grid system. Options include a 69/16-inch jamb, interior clear-wood finish, and simulated divided lights. The replacement windows come in double-hung and picture styles, as well as a variety of architectural shapes.

Wood Sounds asked:

The turn of the 20th century saw an unfortunate period of attempts to assimilate most Native American peoples into mainstream America. The Indians were faced with incredibly harsh assimilation rules and there was further relocation as treaties and reservations were illegally modified. Simple survival as a people and as individuals became forefront in the activities of Native Americans, especially during the 1930s and 1940s. As a result, many cultural aspects were forbidden or prohibited and their practice went “underground.”

Beginning in the late 1940s, as assimilation rules began to disappear, the flute tradition was among the cultural aspects that began to resurface. Native flute players increased and gained some prominence. Belo Cozad (Kiowa), Dan Red Buffalo (Lakota), **** Foolbull (Lakota), George Watchetaker (Comanche), Abel Big Bow (Kiowa), Woodrow Haney (Seminole), and Doc Tate Nevaquaya (Comanche), among others, reacquainted both natives and non-natives alike with the native flute. Non-natives, such as Dr. Richard Payne, Thurlow Lieurance and Vernon McNeal also played a significant role the revitalization of the flute tradition.

The 1970s marked the beginning of the period when flute makers shifted from primarily making flutes for their own use to primarily making flutes in quantity for use by others. Many began deriving, at least partially, their livelihood from their work.

The renaissance of the native flute was still in its infancy and only a relatively few makers emerged during the 1970s. Some learned their craft from relatives in previous generations. Hawk Littlejohn (who actually began making flutes in the 1950s), and Tim Spotted Wolf learned from their Grandfathers, while Sonny Nevaquaya learned from his father, Doc Tate. Others met Dr. Payne and discovered his wealth of knowledge, including Dr. Oliver Jones and Michael Graham Allen. Many turned to historic flutes for their inspiration including Raven Charles King and Arnold Richardson. And there were a number that taught themselves, including Carl Running Deer, Zacciah Blackburn and Lew Paxton Price. The early 1980s added a few more makers including Lakota George Estes and Ken Light.

The 1980s saw the emergence of two influences that had a dramatic impact on flute making. The first was R. Carlos Nakai, who has become perhaps the most prominent player in modern times. He not only influenced countless people to take up the instrument as players, but also quite a number of people to make them. His impact became most apparent in the early 1990s. The second was the release of a dozen books by Lew Paxton Price, covering every facet of constructing native flutes. They have become the foremost reference on the subject and many contemporary makers consider his books an important influence in their work.

This period also saw the introduction of numerous innovations in the crafting of native flutes. Power tools began to supplement hand tools to in some cases improve precision work and reduce crafting time. Makers began using more than cedars, cane and bamboo. Flutes were made in a wide variety of softwoods and hardwoods as well as domestic and foreign exotic woods. Plastic and metal tubes also found their way into flute making.

A significant modification to emerge at this time was the carving of the flue into the block directly, thus creating a style that needed no nest/roost. This has become a standard feature on what is now referred to as the “Plains” flute, or what should perhaps be called the “Contemporary Plains” flute.

Other innovations included the use of Western music tunings, such as pentatonic minor, diatonic and chromatic major. This led to the introduction of over two octaves of keys that flutes were tuned to. Multiple tone chamber flutes (usually referred to as drones or dual-chambered) began appearing as well as double bass designs (those of Michael Allen) that required additional mouthpiece fixtures.

As the 20th century drew to a close, flute makers offering their flutes to the public numbered over one hundred. There is indeed a receptive market. Professional and amateur players now number in the upper hundreds, flute circles have sprung up nation-wide and internationally, web-clubs and list servers abound on the internet, and hospitals and other service centers are recognizing the benefits of flute music.

Flute making, as well as flute playing, has crossed all cultural bounds and has ensured the flute tradition will survive well into the 21 century.

Paul Alexander Wood asked:

When push comes to shove and the reality of our life being in our own hands starts to sink in, how does it feel? Slightly scary, perhaps?

When we are no longer relying on anybody else for our survival, by way of a standard 9-5 job that we have had for a while, or our salary that we have become accustomed to, or anything else for that matter, all of sudden we may begin to think slightly differently about everything?

We might find ourselves saying the following things; ‘Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea?’ ‘Maybe I’m better off working in my old job, at least I knew where I was each week, what to expect? etc’ ‘I seemed to have a much better grip on my reality, I felt slightly more confident about my life when I worked for somebody else.’

It all seemed like such a good idea, the opportunity to take control of your life, it appeared like it was the best thing for you to do. It all made sense not so long ago.’

Then all of sudden, things start to become a little less clear, maybe the grass isn’t always greener on the other side? ‘

What happens?

Self doubt creeps in and the voice of uncertainty speaks, or rather you give it centre stage with a microphone. The voice says ‘Are you sure you can do this?’ ‘Maybe it’s better if we carry on as we are for just a little while longer.’ ‘I am not sure this is really the right move?’ ‘You are risking a lot here?’ ‘Let’s come back to this in a few years time.’

In a bid to prevent yourself from any anguish, you suddenly take the step of not doing very much work towards making it all happen for yourself, so you can then prove to yourself that you were right and that it was all a bad decision. You should have just stayed where you were. Is it possible that your mind really does work like that? That if you have any doubts at all, your behavior suddenly changes in a way to prove the doubts that you had to be correct?

The fact is if you don’t use your mind in a positive way, it will more often than not start thinking of ways of being negative.

When you are faced with having your own destiny very much in your own hands, it can suddenly change how you feel about things and yourself. Everybody’s fate is in their own hands, but how many people ever get to experience it first hand? (For example, working for themselves) Or even want to experience it? How many people are just going along with their accepted lives, accepted destinies, letting life dictate to them, instead of the other way around? Grateful that they have jobs. For some this may be a perfectly acceptable way to live, but for others it may not be. Instead they want to carve out their own reality, one that suits them and their own desires and wants.

Being the architect of your destiny is not an easy way out, it will not fall into your lap from you just wishing it come true, it will take work and effort on your part to manifest the parts of your life that aren’t there. But when you do and you see for yourself how it is possible and how it can be done you will be glad you did, and the rewards will more than make up for the effort you put in to get there.

It is potentially a powerful position to be in, but it should not be taken lightly, be serious about making something happen for yourself or don’t bother at all, instead go back to what you were doing before. Self doubt is natural, but don’t fall at the first hurdle, there will be obstacles coming up, you are just going to have to deal with them.

At some point previously you obviously thought that more than what you had was possible for yourself, so now with your fate in your own hands, go full tilt, head first and give it some effort. Keep the goal very much in focus, and when doubt creeps in don’t listen to it, instead do something to work towards your goal.

Deep down you want to do this, you really want this to be a success and you know that if the change you are working towards were a success it would change you and your life for the better. Sure nobody said it was easy but how much harder will it be later on in your life knowing that you didn’t at least have a go at creating something for yourself.

If you do find yourself in this position don’t worry because there will be plenty of people who also didn’t so you’ll be in good company. But imagine this; will it be harder to live with yourself knowing that you gave up at the first attempt? The going started getting a little tough so you thought ‘no this is not for me’, ‘time to look for a new job’, ‘time to re-think my strategy’, or whatever.

Once committed to the change and once you start working towards your goal you will be getting closer each and every day, when you do this you will always be closer to your goal than you have ever been in the past. So instead of listening to the self doubt in your head, stay positive and focused and always remember to keep moving forward in life.

How do I hollow a tree trunk?
I have the carving tools, the file, the trunk, but I don’t know how to hollow it. I can’t simply start carving down the center of a tree trunk, i would either need to split the trunk in half vertically (which I don’t want to do), or somehow saw a hole down the center of it to give me somewhere to start carving. It’s hard to explain this in writing, so I appreciate any help you can offer!

anonymous asked:

going to be a wood carver and not just a whittler, you’ll need to select a number of tools. There’s just no way around it. So what are the right tools for wood carving?

Tools for Sharpening. Before the carving tools, it seems appropriate that tools for sharpening them should come first. After all, if they aren’t sharp, what’s the use? You’ll drive yourself mad.

At the very minimum, you should have a sharpening stone and a strop. The sharpening stone is used to get your edges to sharpness. Many sharpening stones come in different shapes and in different sizes. Some are very accommodating to the typically short blade lengths of wood carving blade edges. There are diamond coated slipstones that work very well to sharpen an edge. Some sharpening stones can even be found on a key chain or as small as a credit card. So very convenient.

A well-sharpened edge will have a burr and micro-bits of metal still clinging to it. A strop can easily remove all of these. This is very important in wood carving. Anything added to the edge will only slow your progress. You’ve got to get everything off. If you prefer, you could use a honing compound or a honing board to smooth out your edges.

If you’re really serious about becoming a wood carver, it is highly recommended that you learn how to sharpen and strop a knife. Once you’ve learned that, you’ll also be able to sharpen most other carving edges. When it comes to wood carving, you always want smooth sharp edges. They determine your efficiency. When you can achieve them, you’ll be worlds ahead of the rest. No kidding.

Tools for Shaping. Each type of carving tool that is meant to shape wood has a specific function. At the very minimum, you should have carving knives, wood chisels, wood gouges, wood rasps and rifflers, a mallet and maybe even a power drill.

?Carving knives. This is your most basic of all carving tools and there are many kinds. There are straight-edged knives, skewed knives, bent knives, chip knives, detail knives, special pocket knives modified for carving and folding knives with lockable blades. And these aren’t all of them. There are even micro-knives or micro-tool kits, if you’d like.

It’s a matter of functionality. Each edge is target specific. When you’ve learned what each type of knife can do, and you’ve considered the carving project ahead of you, then you’ll know which knives are best for that job. The best knives used for one specific task may not be the same knives that are best for another. That’s why you’ve got choices.

?Wood chisels. Chisels can be found with a bevel on only one side of the edge or they can be found with a double-sided beveled edge. The head may be slanted or square in shape. They may even be bent forward or backward. You’ll have quite a selection.

?Wood gouges. You’ll find yourself using these tools all the time in wood carving. There are many shapes and sizes. Some are very short and stout while others extend for a few inches with an extended blade edge. You’ll probably end up with several kinds. That’s not a problem. Surely, you’ll use each one at some time or another.

?Wood Rasps or Riffler files. It’s easy to get confused when you’re shopping around for these tools. Not all merchants agree. Really. Some stores call it a rasp, others will call it a riffler. And yet another will call it a rasp riffler. How to know, how to know. Well, the majority of merchants appear to agree that a rasp is a very coarse, straight file. The tool itself may be thick and rectangular like a sharpening file but don’t be surprised to find those that are slender with a curving head, looking just like a riffler.

Rifflers, on the other hand, are usually slender with a curved head. Many times these curved heads can be found on both ends of the riffler. You can even find kits that offer you different shaped heads and at different sizes.

?Mallets. These little hammers are invaluable in the right circumstance. They are a must for chip carving, relief carving and intaglio carving. (What am I saying?) Mallets are a must for all wood carving. You may need just a few millimeters off of here and no more, maybe add a little notch there, an indent over here, maybe create a shadow. It really is such a valuable tool.

?Power tools. There are some pretty nice power tools for wood carving. There are power drills, rotor saw burrs, power chisels and mini grinders. You can even find power carving kits. There’s even a wood carver’s kit that offers its own selection of power grinders.

These tools are quite extraordinary in how much time and labor they can save wood carvers. Many consider them only for life-size or extremely large carvings. It’s all up to the carver. Hey, how about a carving created entirely by power tools? (… Wonder how big that’d be.)

Tools for Sanding and Smoothing. When all the wood carving and shaping is done, you’ll want to sand and smooth all surfaces. This is an important step that precedes any painting or varnishing. In doing so, you’ll remove any remains from any previous finishing process and you’ll also prepare the wood to bond with any non-penetrating chemicals. Sanding can be done using sand paper, sanding clothes or sanding sticks.

?Sanding is often accomplished using sand paper. There are many grades, from very, very coarse to very, very fine. There’s quite a selection. Something very similar to this is the defuzzing pad. It does as it sounds. It removes all fuzz still clinging to the wood surface.

?There are sanding clothes that come in a roll and are available in varying grit sizes. Sections may be cut from the roll and rolled or folded as you wish. Best thing is, you don’t have to worry about it cracking or falling apart on you.

?Sanding sticks may also be found in varying grit sizes. You can also find sanding stick kits or sanding detail kits that can remove glue or minute remains of your finishing products. Mini-belt sanding sticks or sanding belts may be used for large sanding jobs.

Wood carving is an amazing craft to develop. You could use just a handful of tools and work with small projects. Or you could use a bunch of tools, including power tools, to work on really large projects. Either way, it’s very relaxing, oftentimes exhilarating and extremely satisfying. Have fun!

Gen Wright asked:

knows that teak furniture is likely to be expensive. So some homeowners write off buying home pieces that are make from this wood even before they start looking. This is unfortunate because there are ways to buy at lower prices. But before exploring that, let’s first take a look at why teak furniture tend to command a higher price.

If you have ever bought wood furniture, you know that you either buy products that are made from softwood or hardwood. Wood belonging to each category share similar characteristics. For example, you can expect softwood to be easier to work with, but they damage easily. Hence, they are not as durable as hardwood. Many modern furniture is made from such materials. Hardwood, on the other hand, is much more durable. But they are harder to work with. These characteristics make them ideal for more conventional and simplistic designs, and products made from such wood are expected to last for many years.

However, both softwood and hardwood share a common weakness - they tend to be easily damaged when exposed to moisture. Moisture is like an invisible killer. Many homeowners are not even aware of the humidity levels in (or outside) their homes. So they leave expensive wood furniture out there, only to find that the interiors start to rot away after a couple of years. Therefore, if the furniture is meant for an area with high humidity levels, precautions must be taken to protect the materials. For example, the outer protective film must be replaced with another new layer every year or so.

Here is where nature works its magic. Teak, unlike all the other woods, produce it’s very own protective film of oil. This is a unique characteristic of teak. The oil helps to protect the wood naturally. In addition, teak is easier to work with compared with the other hardwoods. For these reasons, you often see teak being used as decorative items in outdoor settings. They even come in elaborate designs because they behave well under the carving knife and chisel.

If you are considering refurnishing your home, remember to add teak furniture to your shopping list. But note that the price of most home items are influenced by 2 factors - building materials, workmanship and brand. If you choose teak to be your primary material, be prepared to pay slightly more. Also, furniture with rare or complex tends to cost more as well. This is because more labor is required to produce the furniture. And exclusivity always cost more.

However, there are ways that you can get your hands of premium quality teak furniture without having to pay outrageous prices. For example, try buying from furniture wholesalers if you are looking at refurnishing an entire house. The more you buy, the more discounts you receive. Try to source for wholesalers in countries that have the ability to employ cheaper labor. Lower cost of production means part of that savings could be passed on to you, the customer.

I have found lots of wood to use and it is through some of the means you have recommended, but it is green wood and has to be waited to dry (up to 6 months) before it can be shaped and carved. I am making one for a friend and need one ready to be carved now… i have found someone from USA who pre drys nice wood and sells it on for this specific reason but am looking for someone more local to UK who does this so i can pick one for my friends present.

The Delivery costs from USA is a little much…

Originalbirdart.com (Mill House Gallery) was launched in March 1998 to help bird and wildlife artists market their work on the Internet. Since the internet is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it allows for a larger audience of fans and collectors to become acquainted with and to conveniently purchase the artists’ work (unlike localized art galleries and shows). Originalbirdart.com does not charge the artists for setting up their work, only a small commission which is about half what a typical gallery charges. A work’s price is set by the artist, and is the same elsewhere. In shows or galleries, however, when a sale is made on Originalbirdart, the artist will receive a larger and much deserved share of that sale for his or her efforts.

Originalbirdart.com was created and is managed by John Hazelton who is a graduate of the computer industry having worked for IBM and Sperry Computer Systems for over 20 years. John and his wife began to collect bird and wildlife art 12 years ago, so Originalbirdart was launched very naturally because of its creator’s personal appreciation of this extraordinary art.

Among all the works of art available, you will find bird paintings, bird art, wildlife art, animals and animal art, landscapes and landscape art, seascapes and seascape artwork, wildlife sculptures and carvings (wood carvings, or bronzes, pewter, fiberglass), original bird and wildlife paintings, still life artwork, The demographics of the artists exhibiting their art on Originalbirdart.com are a total of 59. They range from many parts of the USA as well as from the UK, Spain, Italy, Canada, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Mexico and the Netherlands.

Originalbirdart.com brings together available artwork from artists from Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Idaho, Canada, and recently, worldwide. Originalbirdart.com’s focus area for talented and accomplished artists was originally the Midwest, but now, there is no restriction. The artist’s actual artwork may be in their homes and studios, or on displays in galleries and shows. Originally, Originalbirdart.com began operations in Wisconsin in the Town of Ottawa’s only millhouse which was built in the mid-1800’s on the bank of a small stream called Scuppernong. In 2007, Originalbirdart.com relocated along-side the “world famous” White River in Norfolk, Arkansas.

You may also go to the Testimonials section in Originalbirdart.com’s website to get feedback from the many satisfied collectors. The Testimonials provided are for works ranging from $500 to $5000. One of those satisfied collectors expressed how they received their painting in a perfectly packed and very well protected condition. They also mentioned how they were blown away by the level of details and thought of composition…

John Hazelton and the artists hope everyone enjoys the paintings and works of art exhibited in Originalbirdart.com. Hopefully you will feel comfortable investing in original art through this medium as well. John Hazelton and the artists are determined to make this “virtual gallery” a success and are certain that you will be completely satisfied with your selection of original paintings and works of art.

Groshan Fabiola asked:

Giving presents is something we usually enjoy doing, especially around the holidays or on special occasions. When you choose a gift for someone who is dear or important to you, you can hardly wait to see the surprise and delight on that person’s face. And when want to really surprise that person and make sure that your gift will be appreciated, you usually think of something you know that person would love. But it has to be more than just that. The gift you choose for a special person has to be special, something unique that he or she will hold dear. What follows is addressed to people who love dogs or to those who want to choose a unique gift for their dog-loving friends.

You can always have a dog picture framed or have an artist paint a painting of your friend’s dog, and that person will certainly be delighted. But I have to say that there is hardly anything creative and original about that. Instead of choosing a present that anyone could think of, your gift can be unique, if you simply do a little thinking out of the box. If imagination is not your strongest point, you can still rest assured that you can find original dog breed gifts, as other dog lovers have already beaten you to creating all sorts of excellent pieces, works of art in the true sense of the words, pieces that bear the image of breed dogs.

The diversity of dog breed gifts that you can choose from is nothing but overwhelming. Go online, and you will have so many woodcarvings with dogs to choose from that you can be certain you’ll find something appropriate. I mean, you can always go to the shop down the street an buy something ordinary for the dog’s owner, but that’s no way to impress and delight the person that you care about. Instead of doing that, you can place your customized order from the privacy of your home, without wasting precious time on going from shop to shop, hoping that you will eventually find something worth spending money on. And you’ll probably be surprised by the extensive list of dog breed gifts that you can order from, as there are hand carved and hand painted pieces for more than one hundred and fifty dog breeds.

Woodcarvings with dogs are fine works of art, but you may not happen to agree with me on that one. If the case is such, you should know that the dog breed gifts you can find online are hardly the only option you have as a gift to a person who loves dogs. You can choose from yet another extensive list of gifts, other than hand carved pieces, such as t-shirts, pillows, handbags, hats, or even mouse pads, all personalized with the image of that trusted companion. Tree ornaments, pieces of jewelry, clocks, and so much more can bear the image of the dog that your friend loves so much.

Undoubtedly the most hard work and dedication is put into creating those fine works of art that I was telling you about earlier, namely the hand carved dog breed gifts. You can only imagine how creating something with your hands is special, but you have to agree that carving wood is unique. Choosing a woodcarving as a gift for a friend who loves dog is not only appropriate, but also unique. Aside from the fact that the person will love the gift for what it is, he or she will also appreciate its high quality and uniqueness, not to mention the fact that you have been so thoughtful as to give an extraordinary gift.
